Windows and doors for Knoxville homes

Fogged glass, a sash that won't stay up, a draft at the latch: the usual signs a window is done. We replace windows and entry doors on Knoxville-area homes and flash them into the wall so the rain stays out.

More in Choosing replacement windows.

Frame materials

Vinyl costs the least and never needs paint, so it's the usual replacement frame. Fiberglass costs more, but it's stiffer, so a slimmer frame shows more glass. Wood-clad frames put real wood inside the room and an aluminum or vinyl shell outside. They cost the most.

Insert or full-frame replacement

An insert replacement sets a fitted window inside the old frame. The trim and siding stay put, so it costs less, but you give up a little glass.

A full-frame replacement takes the old window out down to the wall framing and costs more. It's the right call when the sill is soft or water has been getting into the wall, because the window gets flashed into the house wrap. We check each sill for soft wood and tell you which one each window needs.

The energy label in plain words

ENERGY STAR uses ratings from the National Fenestration Rating Council, printed on the NFRC sticker on the glass. Two matter most here.

U-factor is how easily heat moves through the whole window. Lower is better. It's what keeps the room by the glass warm on a January night.

Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is how much of the sun's heat gets in. A lower number means a west-facing room that doesn't bake in July.

ENERGY STAR's limits on both change by climate zone: see the zone map and limits on energystar.gov. For savings, read What replacement windows save on a power bill.

Entry doors

  • Fiberglass. Won't rot and shrugs off dents. Stained, it passes for wood.
  • Steel. Costs the least and feels solid. A deep scratch will rust if it isn't touched up.
  • Wood. Heavy and handsome, but it wants a covered porch and fresh finish every few years.

Doors come already hung in their own frame, so they close square and seal. See the window and door brands we work with.

Questions about windows and doors

Should I replace all my windows at once?

You don't have to. If a few windows are fogged or soft and the rest are sound, replace those few. Doing the whole house at once usually lowers the price per window and keeps them matching. We'll price it both ways.

Do replacement windows need a permit?

It depends on your town and the job. Rules differ from town to town, and making a window bigger can change the answer. We check for your address, and if a permit is needed, we pull it.

Do you replace windows and doors?

Yes, replacement windows and entry doors, and they can go in alongside siding so the trim and flashing get done once. For energy ratings, read the sticker. The U-factor shows how well a window holds heat in over winter, and lower is better. The solar heat gain number shows how much summer sun gets through as heat.

Can I pay for my roof over time?

Ask us. We don't offer a lender program today, so tell us when you book that you'd like to spread out the cost. You'll get a written price for your bank or credit union. Common choices are a home improvement loan, a credit union personal loan, or a home equity line of credit.

Can I just text you a photo?

Please do. Text a photo of the problem (the ceiling stain, the shingles in your yard, the spot you can see from the street) to (865) 830-8126 with your address. We'll text back what it looks like and whether someone needs to come out. It's the fastest way to find out if a problem is small.
