Jefferson City, TN

Jefferson City roofing company

Jefferson City started as Mossy Creek, grew up around a Baptist college, and got a lake on its doorstep when TVA dammed the Holston. Its roofs run from campus-street houses to lake places on Cherokee Lake.

Around Carson-Newman

The university opened as Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary in 1851 (Wikipedia), and the streets around campus filled in over the next century. Older houses near the college often have steep gables, chimneys nobody lights anymore, and flashing that's been tarred over more than once. A cold chimney still needs sound counterflashing, because rain runs down the brick whether there's a fire or not. Chimney repair covers that work.

Plenty of these homes are rented to students and staff. A landlord usually wants two things from us: a written price, and a crew that's gone before move-in weekend.

When the lake arrived

TVA started buying land around Jefferson City in 1940, and Cherokee Dam was finished on December 5, 1941, on a crash schedule (Wikipedia). The lake brought weekend places and boat docks, then year-round homes along its south shore.

In a normal year the water swings about 27 feet, so a dock roof can sit far above mud in winter and close to the waterline by summer. Houses up on the bluffs catch the open-water wind, and their ridges, rakes and any loose drip edge show the wear first.

Mossy Creek and the zinc years

Zinc mining shaped the town in the twentieth century (Wikipedia), and the older blocks near the original Mossy Creek station mix frame houses with small commercial buildings. Those buildings tend to have a low-slope section behind a sloped front, and that's where water sits. A roof repair on the flat rear section is often all an older building needs.

Permits come from the city

Inside city limits, the Jefferson City Building Department issues building permits and handles inspections (City of Jefferson City). Its page says plan review averages about seven days when plans are required. Outside the city, Jefferson County's Building Department sets the rules (Jefferson County). We find out which side of the line you're on, ask that office what it wants for a re-roof, and build any wait into the schedule.

Common questions

Can you work around a student lease?

Yes. Tell us when the tenants move out and the next ones move in, and we'll aim the job at that gap. A summer turnover usually leaves plenty of room for a house roof.

Do houses on Cherokee Lake need anything special?

A shingle line made for high wind, nailed the way its maker specifies for high wind, and starter strip along the rakes as well as the eaves. On a boathouse or dock roof, metal often outlasts shingles because the damp never lets up.

Do you work on cabins and rental properties?

Yes. Cabins and rental homes are welcome, and they often have steep pitches and metal roofs, both of which we work on. A property manager can book an inspection for a place they don't live at; just give us the address and how to reach the yard. If you look after more than one property, each gets its own written price.

My ceiling is stained near the chimney. Is it the chimney or the roof?

Usually it's the joint between them. Flashing runs under the shingles where the chimney comes through, and counterflashing set into the brick laps over it. When either pulls loose or rusts, rain runs down into your ceiling. We fix flashing, add crickets and seal crowns. If the brick itself is crumbling, you need a mason, and we'll say so.
