Roofing in Powell and the Emory Road corridor

Powell sits in the valley between Copper Ridge and Beaver Ridge, with older homes near the old station and subdivisions along Emory Road. It isn't a city, so Knox County sets the permit rules.

Older homes near the old station

Powell's older houses tend to carry more than one layer of shingles and decking that has seen a few leaks. Expect the price on one of those to include some replacement boards, and ask for the per-board cost up front, in writing.

Older roofs here often have tired flashing too: bent metal at the chimney, or a patch nailed over the hole where a vent used to be. Old flashing should come off with the shingles. Reusing it is how a fresh roof ends up leaking at the same chimney.

Emory Road subdivisions

The subdivisions along Emory Road are mostly architectural shingles, many coming up on their first serious repair. The usual suspects are tabs lifted along the rakes, ridge caps worn thin, and flashing pulling away where a roof meets a second-story wall. Caught before water reaches the decking, those are repairs, and a replacement can wait.

Permits through Knox County Codes

Powell isn't part of the City of Knoxville, so Knox County Codes Administration (knoxcounty.org/codes) sets the permit rules here, not the city office. That matters if you've read about Knoxville's re-roof permit and its tear-off inspection: those city rules stop at the city line. Give us the address and we'll confirm what the county asks for. When a permit is needed, it's pulled before work starts and the fee is on your price.

Common questions

Is Powell inside Knoxville city limits?

No. Powell is unincorporated, so Knox County's codes office handles permits, not the city's. Your mail may say Knoxville, but that doesn't change which rules apply to the roof. Send us the address and we'll confirm which office covers it, and we pull the permit when one is needed.

Can you match a few missing shingles on an older Powell roof?

Often we can get close. If the shingle line is still made, the color can be matched, though replacement pieces look brighter for a season until they weather in. If the line was discontinued, we'll show you the nearest options before anything goes on.

Do you pull the permit?

Yes. Inside Knoxville city limits a re-roof needs a city building permit and an inspection after tear-off. Farragut, Maryville, Oak Ridge and the counties set their own rules; Farragut, for example, says a plain re-roof usually doesn't need one. We check the rule for your address and pull the permit when one is needed.

Which areas do you cover?

All of East Tennessee. We work across Knox, Blount, Loudon, Anderson, Roane, Sevier, Jefferson, Hamblen, Grainger, Union, Monroe and Cocke counties, from Knoxville and Farragut out to Maryville, Sevierville, Oak Ridge, Lenoir City and Morristown.
